Shutter speed in photography and film, though performing a similar function, is used very differently, and the two uses are not comparable. In film, shutter speed or shutter angle is closely related to FPS.

Shutter speed does not "improve image quality". It's a tool to control light and to use creatively. Sometimes you will want slow shutter speeds and sometimes you will want faster. Timelapse done with a high shutter speed looks shit. Sports photography done with a low shutter speed will look shit (unless done for a specific creative reason).

And no cameras brag about shutter speed...there's nothing to brag about! It's just a number you can choose.

As to whether "the quality of the film is still higher than the normal cameras", that's an argument that's changing every day. Though as I mentioned, the consensus is still that film is preferable for the moment.

actually quite a few phones and cameras have boasted shutter speed in advertising as because like you say it makes for faster shots and better action shots, as for it being adjustable, that isn't always the case, in the majority of phones you can change the iso but it is a digital process in the photocell of the majority of "standard" devices, it has nothing to do with the lense speed meaning you can set the iso to what would be a fast shutter speed, but you will still get motion blur on a lot of devices as they keep the shutter speed but just change how the photocell processes the light coming in. basically it's like a dimmer switch for the photocell. so shutter speed is actually still something boasted by certain manufacturers due to wanting to claim the ability to do action shots and get into the camera and take a picture at such a speed you should never miss anything.

anyway back to netflix, just watched Bright, it's a good netflix film, as their first true big budget movie however it felt a bit isolated. the mythology of the world seems it could be really interesting, it's basically lord of the rings in now time, it is a great world and an interesting world. the problem is it is more or less a buddy cop movie (sort of bad boys with an orc) and as such it revolves heavily around Smith and his orc buddy, it does follow a quite fast paced story to a point I would say too fast, they throw groups at you and races but they don't give much background or reason why they are what they are other than basic like "inferni = bad and want to bring back the dark one" basically that about all the background you get and for the main plot it's really all you need. so it is pretty standard as a film, but it just feels like Netflix should have put it into a TV show format more than a movie. it needed more time and should have explored the mythology of the world more, so as a stand alone it feels quite small, but if Netflix builds on the franchise it could be something great that could potentially come in line with the likes of lord of the rings.

We've been talking about how films are shot...so camera phones aren't really all that relevant!

Shutter speed is one of the basic principles of photography, so if you can't manually control it, the camera is missing the basics.

If camera phone manufacturers are indeed using the shutter speed their phones are capable of as a marketing tool, then that just shows either how very far their cameras still have to come, or/and it's meaningless marketing buzzwords to entice the layperson.

You do know the average camera is actually the same camera out of a smart phone and uses the exact same tricks, in hobby level it may be a standard feature, but in the type of camera the normal person would by in the likes of Curry's they do make a brag on things like shutter speed as it is a hobby level feature so in low end standard equipment it is used as a brag.

My previous post still addresses all that.

I thought that Bright move was decent right up until the last 20 minutes or so where they just throw everything simply to wrap up the movie.

Watched Manhunt: Unabomber. A slow burn, but a really good drama based on the terrorist Ted Kaczynski who would send bombs to his victims in the mail. It's from the perspective of an FBI agent, but there is one episode from Kaczynski's perspective and it's so well acted that you can sort of empathize with the guy.

one interesting thing is is has hard coded english subtitles because i assume due to accents and that the actors are constantly switching between cantonese/mandarin, hindi and english.

                            • Bastards, why would they cancel that, it has a quarter of a million viewers on average and that's not even taking into account its popularity on Netflix. Absolute cunts. Stupid BBC nonces.
