If we ever do encounter intelligent life, we better make damn sure they don't get to speak to any theists.
    Can you imagine?
"Yes Ms Alien, I know you have FTL travel and interplanetary bombardment asteroids, but you need to understand that God made US in his image, we are his chosen people......"

be more funny if they turned up and replied to that with "Really? this is God he really wants to have a word with you lot after what you did to his son."

yeah, that is a bit worrying when you think about it. The most powerful people on the planet are pretty much openly religious, and they're likely the ones to be doing any real communication with an extra terrestrial entities (assuming OH SO MANY THINGS). We start telling them about our (various) sky daddies then they're just going to turn around. or nuke us from orbit- only way to be sure.

Oh well, with any luck the majority or religion will have died out in the next few generations and then we can crack on with actually sorting shit out.

Of course the Vatican says that. Catholicism allows an elite few to live in magnificent splendour, in palaces containing priceless works of art and historical documents, with robes made from the finest of materials, carrying scepters made of solid gold, eating 6-course meals consisting of the finest food the planet earth has to offer, drinking the finest of aged French wines AND they get to dictate to a good 1-billion (or so) people how they ought to live their lives.

All this hinges on one very important belief - that WE are the special creation of an invisible magical sky wizard that nobody has ever seen. Of course the Vatican has a contingency plan to maintain their lavish lifestyle in case scientists ever find life on another planet.

What, you thought they would just say "huh, I guess this kinda does mean the whole universe is basically random"? Dream on.

The Catholics will say "This is proof of God's wonderous creation skills. All is in God's plan, but WE are still his special little favourite creation.

The Muslims will say "Nope, it's fake, stop saying you found life or we'll blow up your offices"

The Anglicans will say "Cool. You can believe in God or not. Let's just be nice to one another and our new space friends we found".

Jehovah's Witnesses will ignore it entirely.

Mormons will say Joseph Smith found it written on gold plates that Jesus actually lived on Kepler-52b for a while and made life there before he moved to Utah with his 4 wives.

Scientologists will say evil Lord Xenu put those organisms on the planet, then continue to rake in the last millions from their rapidly-shrinking number of followers.

Buddhists and Confucians won't really be affected, they'll most likely just wonder what the new life tastes like with flied lice.

Atheists will say "hehe, I suspected all along the universe was just random chaos. Now let's play some god damned video games!".

Even though that's pretty damn funny.. Why do people always associate religion with wars and violence. I remember reading something about the % of wars caused by religion and the actual % is pretty low, like around 10%

Religion causing the majority of wars is indeed bullshit. Religion causing the majority of human suffering for the past 2,015 years (especially during wars) is true however.

Specifically it's the religions that worship one God - monotheistic religions, like Christianity, Islam, Judaism. Ancient religions were remarkably tolerant. If people liked a certain God from another religion they would incorporate it in to theirs. For example when Greece was trading a lot with Egypt (before Alexander conquered it), a lot of Egyptian merchants were coming to Greek ports and vice-versa. The Greeks really liked a certain Egyptian God (I forget which one) so they incorporated it in to their religion. They literally just said "Hey, we like this God, let's worship it along with Zeus and Poseidon and shit". The Romans too merged other gods in to their belief system as they conquered their way across Europe and the Middle East.

Then Christianity comes along and gets its grip on the Roman Empire (both east and west) and once it has sufficient power it's curtains (and hanging, burning and massacre) of everybody who did not convert.

Then Islam came along and everybody who didn't submit to Allah was enslaved/raped to death/beheaded to death.

Judaism was there all along, with Jews saying "We're the chosen people, us alone, you're inferior" which is why nobody has ever been able to get along with them.
